13 Books for the Creative (or wanting to be!) Soul to Read

13 Books for the Creative (or wanting to be!) Soul to Read

I love Christmastime… the lights, the festivities and the songs! I think I love it so much because it gets me feeling just so… cozy.

Come January though, all I’m left with is cold, gray, dark, and cold. This year, I’m stocking up on some of these little treasures, to bring in a little fun to the rest of winter!

These are meant for everyone to enjoy, whether you consider yourself a creative person or not!

Start Where You Are: A Journal for Self-Exploration

I love LOVE this little journal so far… and I haven’t even started it! To be honest, I’ve only managed to skim through the pages. I’m a little intimidated to start journaling, so I bought a sketchbook along with this book. My plan is to cut out each page, paste it in my sketchbook, and add notes, doodles and other clippings to it.

How to Be a Wildflower: A Field Guide

I’m a huge fan of Katie Daisy, and this book is just so so so pretty. Even if you don’t care anything about flowers, outdoors, or enjoying little things… you will love the gorgeous illustrations.

Katie Daisy “Love This Life” Weekly Planner

No surprise, when I saw Katie Daisy also had a planner… I had to have it! Something about adding to-dos like, “buy chicken” and “fold laundry” on these pretty pages make it so much more enjoyable!

Dual Tip Brush Marker Pens

New journals require new pens- they just do 🙂 Not much better than a new batch of fine tip pens…

A Book That Takes Its Time: An Unhurried Adventure in Creative Mindfulness

When I was younger, I would cut anything and EVERYTHING that struck me out of newspapers, magazines, etc. I had piles and piles of little clippings and bits of bright paper. This little book encourages that behavior! It is filled with bound-in postcards, mini-journals, stickers, decorative papers for collaging, and many more surprises to encourage slowing down and appreciating the little things.

Harvest: Unexpected Projects Using 47 Extraordinary Garden Plants

The pictures alone are reason enough to enjoy this book! It includes seasonal projects inspired by “unexpected” garden plants.

From a reviewer:

“The 47 projects include salad dressings, salads, edible flower-pressed cheese, tea bundles, facial masks, herbal sugar (scented geranium sugar), edible flower-infused vinegar, a salve for minor sores/wounds/bites/stings, iced teas, natural dyes, marigold bitters, a lemongrass salt scrub (definitely right up my alley since I like to make my own skin care products!), custom herb blends, lip balms, gin & tonic, edible flower-infused water, smudge sticks to burn as incense, margaritas and flower/herb arrangements to decorate your home.”

Create Your Life Book: Mixed-Media Art Projects for Expanding Creativity and Encouraging Personal Growth

Another of my wish list items..

(The author) She believes that the act of creating art can be a gateway into healing and personal growth – often, her art classes contain an element of self development as well as learning art techniques. She is deeply devoted to helping people get in touch with their creative fire and would love to help YOU too to get in touch with the artist in you!

Flora Forager: A Seasonal Journal Collected from Nature

Another stunning journal. This journal has beautiful scenes made from leaves and flowers, along with many blank pages to fill.

How To Draw Modern Florals: An Introduction To The Art of Flowers, Cacti, and More

Ah, when I saw this book, I added it to my Christmas list right away! When the top review is “BEST book I have ever bought… ” you know it is something special!

Hand Lettering for Relaxation: An Inspirational Workbook for Creating Beautiful Lettered Art

The perfect way to cultivate calmness… while cleaning up your penmanship! Seriously, I’ve been eye-balling all the stunning hand-lettering designs out there… and relaxing is a great bonus!

Imagine A Forest: Designs and Inspirations for Enchanting Folk Art

“Such a beautiful book, I even love the cover, so thick and soft and you can feel the indentations of the design. Dinara put her heart and soul into this book and it feels, her artwork is beautiful, lots of ideas are shown and many tips given.”

Q&A a Day: 5-Year Journal

I think this is such a neat idea for a journal! You answer the same question on each day, for five years in a row.

“Simply turn to today’s date, answer the question at the top of the page, and when you finish the journal, start over. As you return to the daily questions again over the years, you’ll notice how your answers change, or don’t!”

Wreck This Journal

This journal encourages you to paint, poke, prod… whatever you want to do with the pages! Even if you think you aren’t “creative”… you might be surprised at your results as you tear through these pages.

The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living

Have you heard of the term “hygge”?

“Hygge (pronounced hue-guh not hoo-gah) is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special.”

I’m still exploring the concept myself, but to me it suggests enjoying the things that your really truly enjoy- that special throw blanket and a book, your favorite warm beverage, those cosy pair of socks.

I encourage you to try a couple (or all!) of these books and journals. Even if you aren’t the journaling type (I don’t feel like I am), or the creative type (I struggle with where to start!), you might be surprised at your results- and how much you enjoy them!
